Knowing this, and reacting in a completely rational and loving way, my parents and wife have always made sure I've had no fewer than 2 cats in my home at any given time. My primary reaction to cats is itchy eyes. I have used a variety of OTC meds in the past to combat this, but almost all eyedrops are ineffective for treating it (largely because they're not designed for this - most simply contain lubricants and vasoconstrictors for reducing redness) and most antihistamines invariably make me sleepy (as most effective antihistamines will). In short, there's not been a satisfactory OTC solution until now. I tried Visine A probably a year ago and was blown away at how effective it was. If you're thinking that being blown away by the effectiveness of an antihistamine eye drop is an exaggeration, you haven't suffered enough. :) I seriously could not believe that something could work so well. I suffer from allergies almost year round; and when I take a Zyrtec pill things calm down pretty quickly. I am soon able to breathe through my nose and my eyes aren't so irritated. In addition, Zyrtec is absolutely essential for me; I sometimes play with my neighbor's dogs but because I am still mildly allergic to the dogs' pet dander and fur I use these Zyrtec pills to alleviate my symptoms from playing with the dogs. The tablets work for just about twenty-four hours just like the makers advertise it to work; but if things aren't quite OK even with the Zyrtec I sometimes pop another--with my doctor's "OK," that is. This drug does not make me drowsy the way other allergy medicines can; and I really like that. Zyrtec is also supposed to stop the itching that comes with hives; but I can't comment on that because I have not needed to take this for hives. Though prescription spray helped my other symtoms, it did not really address eye allergy problem. My eyes would be so itchy, swallon, and irritated. Even my vision was impacted, some days I couldn't even drive. For a few months I was using Opcon-A Eye Drops for Eye Allergy Relief which helped but I had to apply every other hour. During my eye exam, the optomatrist suggested I switch to prescription allergy eye drops instead. When this allergy season started, I did some research and found that Alaway is prescriotion strength and now available over the counter. The first two days I started using Alaway, my eyes were less itchy but still irritated. Starting from the 3rd day on, I can really feel the difference. Though my eyes are still swallon, they're much less itchy. My vision is also back to normal. One drop in each eye once in the morning, once at night is all it takes. Thankfully... This review is from: Bausch & Lomb Alaway Eye Drops, Antihistamine (Health and Beauty) I have been using Alaway for several years and it is the best over-the-counter allergy eye drops in my opinion. Alaway and Zaditor have the same formulation and both work well. Generally, I find Alaway to be cheaper. I have dry eye and eye allergies, mostly tree allergies. When I am not being bothered by allergies, I use Systame Ultra, but when the allergies kick up, I switch to Alaway or alternate them. I am able to control my symptoms without resorting to more expensive prescription medications. My optometrist indicates the active ingredient in Alaway is preferable to other drops that contain naphazoline and/or pheneramine compounds.
