Trade names for these are Chlor-Trimeton and Benadryl respectively. Their worst side-effect is drowsiness, although chlorpheniramine produces much less of this effect. I have severe food allergies, and I have taken chlorpheniramine for around 60 years. When the 12 mg dosage disappeared from the market, I started using brompheniramine maleate. It is essentially identical in performance. If drowsiness is a problem with antihistamines, take them at night. A good night's sleep will help you cope with daytime allergies.More modern antihistamines (now called histamine blockers) are designed to not cause drowsiness, but sadly they do not work as well.
